EDTalks: A Hmong View of Public Education + Globally Competent Teaching

EDTalks is a lively series of networking and education events that engages young professionals in public education issues in the Twin Cities. Each program features two compelling 20-minute presentations by cutting-edge educators, youth advocates, journalists, artists, policy-makers and others, along with ample time for conversation and networking.

Our April EDTalks will feature dynamic presentations by Kao Kalia Yang, author of The Latehomecomer: a Hmong Family Memoir, and Dana Mortenson, CEO of World Savvy.

Kao Kalia Yang is a teacher, public speaker, writer and author of the award-winning book, The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir (Coffee House Press, 2008) and the forthcoming book, The Song Poet (Metropolitan Books, 2016). Born in Thailand’s Ban Vinai Refugee Camp, she is a member of the Hmong ethnic minority and is now an American citizen. She is a graduate of Carleton College and Columbia University’s School of the Arts.

Dana Mortenson’s deep belief in the transformative power of global education led her to co-found World Savvy, which has reached more than 375,000 students and 2,200 educators from three offices nationwide. Dana serves as advisor and board member to a range of nonprofits focused on youth development, international education and social entrepreneurship. She is a 2011 Ashoka Fellow and was named one of The New Leaders Council’s 40 Under 40 Progressive American Leaders in 2010.
