GLOSS:
Gloss began in 2012 as the project of long time friends Jeff Cornell, Sean Neppl, and Jackson Woolsey. Shortly after forming, Jordan Bleau joined on drums and Emmy Carter on synthesizers. Following Bleau's departure in 2013, Josh Olson joined on drums.
Gloss have moved forward by looking backwards. Digging deeper into their influences has recast the band as post-punk vanguards and goth classicists, without shedding their gauzier tendencies. Gloss have slid from After the Snow back to Mesh & Lace, Low Life to Movement, and towards Pornography rather than Wish.
Contrast is found between and within Gloss songs. Guitars and keyboards occupy both crystalline and murky textures. Drums range from open and floating to tight and driving. Vocal duties are shared between Cornell and Woolsey, who both move between commanding and restful deliveries. The division of labor within their songs lends to Gloss’ cohesion.
Diversifying their subject matter has allowed Gloss to further challenge their songwriting abilities. While still retaining the emotional yearning of their early efforts, Gloss has been able to shed light on other affairs: Modern day urban renewal, historical erasure, and economic insecurity. However, for every Ballardian paranoia and political diatribe comes a personal revelation and regret, and this emotional push-pull defines Gloss’ sound: Sometimes at the pulpit, yet only to return to confession.
Finesse:
Finesse is a pop group formed from a mutual appreciation for pop in all its forms.
Patrick Donohoe (Vocals) and Jeff Cornell (Synthesizers) channel the spirit of early synthpop to create memorable, relatable melodies to move to.
