The Counterfactuals:
Drawing inspiration from the serenity and space of small-town Minnesota, The Counterfactuals’ self-titled second release is an indie pop gem that shines with musical and human detail.
Due for release in June 2016, The Counterfactuals reflects the maturation of the band’s distinctive sound through hundreds of hours of DIY experimentation, recorded in the intimate spaces of their daily lives in Northfield: a decaying band room, a record-lined office, a family living room, an echoing stairwell. The album trades some of the overt Americana in Minimally Decent People for guitars drenched with delay, bold synthesizer lines, and more assertive drums and bass. The band also retains the earthy, acoustic dimension of their first album with saxophone, clarinet, piano, and organ layered variously through the tracks. Frontman Daniel Groll’s soaring vocals and honest songwriting remain the band’s emotional core, speaking to themes that matter, from aging, to love, regret, the surveillance state, and even the apocalypse.
The Counterfactuals is a deeply human rock album from a band that continues to explore the full possibilities of its own sound."
Joey Ryan & The Inks:
Joey Ryan & The Inks have created their own brand of classic pop with delicate craftsmanship and an easy spirit. “Young Afternoon”, the band's’ 4th studio release, is due May ‘16 and finds itself in a space where twilight feels new. The Inks, and some of these songs, have been around for nearly a decade, but “Young Afternoon” manages to feel fresh and the most visceral to date.
