Fairfax, AK:
"THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN THE LOUDEST FOLK ACT I HAVE EVER HEARD" - STEVE McCLLELLAN OF FIRST AVENUE
Pat Dougherty began writing songs in a borrowed storage closet. Tinkering with only a borrowed drum set and an old organ, he would periodically emerge to share the works in progress to handful of close friends that would later become Fairfax, AK.
“Dougherty has the songwriting skills and artistry to bring it to the next level.” - Rich Horton RIFT MAGAZINE
After spending the summer performing around the Midwest, Dougherty retreated to an attic in a worn, yellow house in Frogtown and began crafting, Love Stories and Picture Shows.
"Fairfax, AK's way of illustrating the hard work in not just crafting intricate and personal music but that the labor of love carries over into all aspects of their music and how you get to see and hear it. The song, "Just Fine" starts and moves on with a plodding rhythm and melody that eventually errupts into an enveloping Arcade Fire-like sing-along, one of the more heartwarming ingredients in the band's songs on their new disc." - Danny Sigelman CITY PAGES
"Love Stories and Picture Shows is a sweet, cohesive collection of tunes that owe as much to the singer-songwriters of the mid-90s as the folky 60s and punk 70s. It’s a record that slips in an surprises you, like a polished up, lyrically focused take on Spirits of the Red City, or a Hootenanny with an orchestral band." - Carl Swanson CAKE IN 15
Maya Elena:
Maya Elena is a young singer songwriter who has just completed her first self titled 6 song EP. A graduate of the Perpich Arts School, her hypnotic voice and subtle guitar work conjure thoughts and feelings of a seasoned performer well beyond her 22 years.
"An ethereal songbird whose lilting voice dips and dives through her creative arrangements like a rattlesnake fighting a dove. Maya's music leapfrogs through genres melding her musical influences into unique combinations that require new titles like 'JazzFolk' or 'Spooky Blues'--the music is artful and the lyrics sometimes come with an emotional edge but the work is tempered by a certain lightness and even a sense of humor that makes the songs complex but eminently listenable. Do yourself a favor and catch this rising star before she graduates out of our local scene and onto the national stage, talent like this won't be playing small venues for long-- go now and you can say you saw her when..."
