Mike Michel:

In 2013, Minnesota Music Academy award-winning songwriter, guitarist, and community arts program creator Mike Michel developed a severe case of tinnitus (auditory cortex inflammation) and hyperacusis (extreme sound sensitivity), which threatened to take away his livelihood and everyday functioning. At its worst Michel, who has fronted his own band, The Bill Mike Band, and collaborated with such artists as Haley Bonar, Carnage, Dave King and DJ Woody McBride, was absorbing three sounds emulating from his auditory cortex, including a 70-decibel ring tone, which was leading to severe anxiety and mental anguish. He sought the counsel of innumerable physicians and experts, both in Western and Eastern medicine, and slowly found relief through a variety of medications and mindfulness strategies that he shares on his website and social media platforms. And he learned how to navigate listening to music and writing songs again. What emerged is “On The Mend,” Michel’s first studio record in seven years, which has instilled a new sense of purpose in him as a re-emerging artist after three years of rehabilitation. It will be Mike’s first all-acoustic recording.
Michel is putting out the record in collaboration with Think Piece Publishing, an imprint devoted to mental health advocacy. Together they orchestrated a Go Fund Me campaign to raise money to produce the record. Mike’s supporters donated $13,500. Recording took place at the Terrarium in Minneapolis summer of 2016 with Jason Orris as co-producer. Ian Allison (Eric Hutchinson, Jeremy Messersmith) assisted on bass & Steve Goold (Ben Rector) assisted on drums. Michel’s sound on this album is melodic, groove inspired and pop-oriented, with astonishing guitar parts, soaring vocals, sophisticated musical compositions and inspiring lyrics.
Along with touring in support of the album, Michel will be speaking in public and educational settings about managing invisible health conditions. Joining Mike live on May 20th will be Ian Allison on bass, Reese Kling on drums, and other special guests!
