Moodie Black:

Now well over a decade into a career of outsider art, noise rap pioneers Moodie Black have established themselves as an uncompromisingly original act with a penchant for ferocious live shows and a host of critically acclaimed releases to their name. Early iterations of their sound began taking shape in the vast deserts of Arizona before settling into the indie rap haven of Minneapolis, with a brief stop in Los Angeles along the way. Chris Martinez (aka Kdeath), the creator and driving force of Moodie Black, recently announced that they identify as transgender, a topic touched upon with their last release Nausea that comes into sharper focus on their new album, Lucas Acid.

Recorded over two years between Van Nuys and Minneapolis, Lucas Acid is 45 minutes of pounding, unsettled intensity with intermissions of fractured melodic beauty. As the namesake implies, Moodie Black are masters at establishing mood via richly textured backdrops that coil around K’s delivery. There is a vocal clarity on Lucas Acid that was somewhat lost in dense pockets of noise on previous releases that allows for K’s prose and storytelling to shine, with wraithlike wails and jarring screams filling in the negative space. Ceschi Ramos and French singer Pierre Mottron also provide guest vocals.

On Lucas Acid, K is coming to terms with life as a trans person of color in a country increasingly predisposed to pushing such individuals further towards the margins of its narrative. Backed by their own meticulous production, a cacophonous collage of shoegaze, molded distortion, sinister guitars, and industrial hip hop, Moodie Black speaks on identity, paranoia, love and its absence. K’s Moodhouse podcast, which often explores her experiences as a non-binary trans femme individual and struggling musician, has informed her lyrical approach as she navigates the universal process of finding comfort in one’s own skin.

The “brilliant and formidable” (Noisey) Moodie Black will be releasing Lucas Acid, their first full-length in four years, in early 2018 on Fake Four, Inc.

Ceschi:

New Haven CT’s Ceschi (pronounced chess-key) Ramos makes his own version of progressive hip hop spliced with elements of folk & indie rock. Although he has almost “mathy” technical rap abilities he’s first and foremost a singer-songwriter at heart. Although one Ceschi song may consist of punk influenced machine gun fast raps, the next may be a quiet folk ballad played on acoustic guitar.
Since the release of 2010’s Dj Scientist produced conceptual psych-rock inspired hip hop record “The One Man Band Broke Up” Ceschi spent the last few years collaborating with an innumerable amount of today’s most talented MC’s, producers and artists of multiple genres including Sage Francis, Astronautalis & Radical Face. He’s toured throughout North America, Europe, Asia & Australia with independent hip-hop heroes such as Busdriver & Sole and even created his own successful record label – Fake Four, Inc.- that many of these artists now call home.

Their 2015 album "Broken Bone Ballads" has already been considered a cult-folkhop classic in certain circles. A year later, Ceschi & Factor Chandelier have created a heavy hitting, multi-genre, four part song about elections, nostalgia, false prophets & general modern apathy. https://fakefour.bandcamp.com/album/take-it-all-back-parts-1-4
