The Boatman's (Last) Call: A Conversation Afterparty
In celebration of Australia's gloomiest songwriter, enjoy a nightcap with louder music and dancing and the release of the Twin Cities' monthly zine, The Dark Times. Featuring: Wax Lead, DJ Mercury (KFAI, Gothess), Grant Mayland (Dark Energy), Cult of Lip, shadingthesun, and visuals by Half the City.
Wax Lead:
Wax Lead is a post-punk band. The name gives hints of sound: metallic elements that soften, melt, morph, burn, and solidify. Songs range from blues to ballads to a cacophonous train wreck driven by a fifteen-Hertz square wave. Throughout it all, Holly Axelrod's soulful voice carries a flickering light. Their 2018 EP, Husband, Lord, & Master, served as a sardonic echo to a world hell-bent on inequality. Meanwhile the single "Crushed Velvet" received extensive airplay. 2019 saw them supporting DBUK (Slim Cessna's Auto Club), Norman Westberg (Swans), and Wovenhand (16 Horsepower). Wax Lead's sophomore offering, a split 7" with kindred spirits Luna Honey from Washington D.C., comes out October 11th on Blight Records.
Cult of Lip:
Currently located in Minneapolis, MN, The Cult of Lip’s first incarnation formed in 2009 as a solo project under alias VATS, and reformed in 2015 as the core duo of Ronnie Lee (guitars, vocals, drum programming) and Hannah Porter (bass and vocals) , and are often joined by Eric Whalen (drums, percussion).
Longtime staple in the Twin Cities community, The Cult of Lip have opened for acts such as Moon Duo, Protomartyr, A Place To Bury Strangers, Ringo Deathstarr, Holy Wave, and the Telescopes. They’ve also performed at multiple regional festivals including Milwaukee Psych Fest, Altar Fest, and Lincoln Calling. Their last 2 EPs, Your Feedback and Sleep Receiver, will be released Spring 2019 on one 12” LP through MPLS LTD , and the band is currently booking tours through the Fall of 2019 in support of it.
shadingthesun:
shadingthesun makes their 2019 debut with a crop of brand new songs, ranging from synthpop to shoegaze.
