JC Sanford

Composer/trombonist JC Sanford’s unconventional jazz chamber group Triocracy will release their album Pyramid Scheme on April 1, 2019 on Shifting Paradigm Records. Sanford will celebrate the release with a performance at Icehouse on Monday, April 1 at 8p featuring a Twin Cities lineup of Sanford with saxophonist Brandon Wozniak and clarinetist Bruce Thornton.

Trombonist/composer/conductor JC Sanford is deeply rooted in the traditions of jazz and classical music, yet constantly pushing at their boundaries. A long-time student of the legendary Bob Brookmeyer, Sanford has performed as a trombonist alongside the likes of Danilo Pérez, Matt Wilson, Anthony Cox, and Donny McCaslin. A sought-after conductor of new large ensemble music in NYC, he conducts the twice Grammy-nominated John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, the Frank Carlberg Large Ensemble, the Alan Ferber Nonet + Strings, John Ellis’ jazz opera 'Ice Siren', and the Alice Coltrane Orchestra featuring Ravi Coltrane and Jack DeJohnette. His compositions and arrangements have been performed by artists such as Dave Liebman, John Abercrombie, Lew Soloff, and Ingrid Jensen. The 2014 JC Sanford Orchestra album Views from the Inside won international acclaim and was awarded the prestigious Aaron Copland Fund for Recording grant. He is also the leader of two small groups, the jazz quartet JC4, and the chamber jazz trio Triocracy, which will release its next recording on Shifting Paradigm Records this April.  He was recently recognized as a "Rising Star” trombonist and arranger in Downbeat Magazine’s 2018 Critic’s Poll and is a 2018 McKnight Composer Fellow.

 

John Christensen Quartet

Madison based bassist John Christensen will perform in the Twin Cities for the first time as leader, joined by Brandon Wozniak on saxophone, Zacc Harris on guitar, and Lars-Erik Larson on drums. John is known for his work with Milwaukee group Lesser Lakes Trio, and released his first album as leader, Dear Friend, on Shifting Paradigm last June to wide critical acclaim. 

 John Christensen began his bass studies with Chris Wood in high school. After brief stints at Berklee College and North Texas, John Moved to San Francisco and played in the burgeoning music scene during the late 90’s. There he Learned and grew playing with Scott Amenodola, Jenny Scheinman, Liberty Ellman, Hal Stein, Mark Levine, Adam Levy, Slide Five, Vijay Iyer, as well as his own trio Dam East. Since Moving to Wisconsin in 1999 John has played with numerous local artists and bands including Louka Patenaude, Alison Margaret, Anthony Deutsch, Tony Barba, Jonathan Greenstein, Johannes Wallmann and Harmonious Wail. John also is a co-counder of the band Lesser Lakes Trio with longtime collaborators Devin Drobka and Jamie Breiwick and has shared the stage with such luminaries as Maria Schnieder, Miguel Zenon and Russ Johnson.
