JC Sanford Quartet:

Fresh off their new release Keratoconus on Shifting Paradigm Records, the JC Sanford Quartet drastically shifts gears for this Icehouse appearance to perform original music by Sanford’s friends over the years.

Trombonist/composer/conductor JC Sanford is a musician of rare breadth, deeply rooted in the traditions of Jazz and Classical music, yet constantly pushing at their boundaries. Equally at home in many roles, Sanford works regularly as a composer, performer, arranger and conductor. A disciple of the legendary composer/trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, Sanford has had his works performed by Danilo Pérez, Dave Liebman, John Abercrombie, Ingrid Jensen, Lew Soloff, and others. His jazz orchestra CD Views from the Inside garnered international acclaim and received the coveted Aaron Copland Fund Recording Grant.

Since moving to Minneapolis in 2005, Zacc Harris has gained a reputation as one of the area's top guitarists, being named 2017 Twin Cities Best Jazz Artist by the City Pages. He performs in a host of creative projects including Atlantis Quartet, winner of the 2015 McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians, as well as the Zacc Harris Group, American Reverie, and Zacc Harris Trio.  


Chris Bates is a bassist of formidable talent. Having worked professionally for 25 years across all spectrums of the musical landscape he continues to be a driving force in the Minnesota music scene. In 2012 Chris released his debut album ‘New Hope’ with his quintet Red 5. It was the only jazz album to make the Star Tribune’s Critic’s Tally of top albums in 2012. Other releases have included albums by ‘he Good Vibes Trio, Red Planet with Bill Corrothers, and Atlantis Quartet.

Low Talk:

Low Talk makes their premiere performance performing the works of JC Sanford, Charlie Lincoln, and Michelle Kinney with Krissy Bergmark on percussion.

Cellist and Composer Michelle Kinney is a lifelong improviser inspired by collaborative cross-genre work and non-traditional contexts for the cello. Improvising with her cello and looping device for daily dance classes as Musician in Residence at the U of MN’s Dance Program, Michelle follows impulse, gesture and gut response, rhythm and light.Michelle leads her own band What We Have Here, performing her original compositions; and co-leads the two cellos and tabla/drum quartet Jelloslave/Purple Orange which has made two critically acclaimed recordings. 

Krissy Bergmark is a tabla player, percussionist, and composer in the Twin Cities. Bergmark has received commissions and grants through the Cedar Commissions, the Jerome Foundation, the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, and the Minnesota State Arts Board for her tabla studies and compositions for tabla, percussion, and strings. She was also a participant in theInternational Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at Banff Center for Arts and Creativity in 2018, and Silkroad Ensemble’s Global Musician Workshop in 2016.


Born and raised in Minneapolis, Charlie Lincoln is an in-demand bassist in the Twin Cities, having performed with local and international artists including Dave King, Terri Lyne Carrington, and Ned Rothenberg. Charlie has toured through China and Southeast Asia and has appeared on jazz festivals across North America. In 2016, he co-founded the collective quartet Hoaxer which released its debut album Crash Test in 2017 on Illicit Productions. He studied at Berklee College of Music’s Global Jazz Institute under the direction of Danilo Perez and graduated in 2019.
