Scotty Horey and Meeting of the Spirits:
Meeting of the Spirits is a jazz/fusion progressive rock super group that has made special appearances in the twin cities since 2011. Typically combining well chosen chops heavy jazz/fusion rock shedders of the twin cities, and a unique blend of original compositions and greats from the fusion repertoire. The group has presented energetic, instrumentally driven, and tightly rehearsed shows most notably at the Fine Line Music Cafe, University of Minnesota, the Whiskey Junction, Jazz Central, and the Black Dog Music Cafe. The group is typically led by solo percussionist/drummer/composer Scotty Horey and features Mike Salow (guitar), Joel Thielman (keyboards), Jennifer Lang (violin), Aaron Hedenstrom (flute and tenor saxophone), and Greg Beyers (bass and cello).
Scotty Horey is a passionate and versatile percussionist, drummer, and teacher based in the twin cities. He performs locally, nationally and internationally as a solo percussion artist, a percussionist/drummer for hire, and is a drums/percussion teacher of all levels: children, teen, college level, and adult. His strongest passions in music and teaching include classical music, contemporary-classical music, progressive rock and jazz fusion, mind/body "holistic" awareness, and cross cultural understanding, typically performing on solo marimba or as a drummer. He is currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Percussion at both the University of Minnesota-Morris and Southwest Minnesota State University. His passionate performing and teaching work has brought him through the USA, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Portugal, Denmark, Poland, Greece, and Colombia and has earned him a finalist position in the prestigious McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians in 2017. Scotty was called “the Twin Cities’ hungriest young percussionist” by New Music Box, and “a performer of intelligence, raw artistry, and the utmost concentration and energy” by international icon composer James Dillon. Scotty Horey is an endorsed artist for MAPEX drums, VIC FIRTH sticks, SABIAN cymbals, and MAJESTIC percussion. Notable engagements as featured solo artist include the Marimba2010 International Festival and Conference, the First Annual International Festival of Percussion Ensembles of Costa Rica, the Federal University of Uberlandia International Percussion Festival, the 13th International Percussion Festival Patagonia-Argentina, the 10th International Percussion Festival of FOJI in Santiago de Chile, Serie Palcos Musicais de Londrina, the International Percussion Festival Salvador, The Royal Danish Academy of Music, The famous and historic Fryderyk Chopin University of Music, and universities all through-out the world. His diverse teaching expertise has also been integrated in the students, children, and communities of Latin America and Europe in particular, highlighting that cultural exchange and musical comeraderie brings out his most passionate work and deepest sense of purpose, regardless if it's in a large concert hall, or a small town community school.
