Aida Shahghasemi:
Aida Shahghasemi is a Minneapolis based musician with roots in Iran. She studied Psychology and Anthropology at University of Minnesota with a focus on the cultural aspects of Persian Classical Music and the restrictions imposed on the voices of Iranian female vocalists. She received her Masters degree from New York University in Arts Politics where she also served as an adjunct instructor teaching a course she developed on arts activism in Iran. She has worked with a number of different Art and Social Advocacy groups in New York and Minnesota as a musician, graphic designer, and developer and has served as an Assistant Program Coordinator at Hamline University’s Making Waves Social Justice Theatre Troupe. She has been a touring member of Iron and Wine and Marketa Irglova’s band while also being a recording artist on two of Glen Hansard’s albums. Her two albums are “Wind Between the Horse’s Ears”, released in 2015, and “Cypress of Abarkooh”, released in 2019. She is a McKnight Music Fellow and serves as an adjunct faculty in the MFA program at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Aida is pursuing a second Masters degree in Counseling Psychology and currently serves as the co-chair for the Growth and Sustainability pillar in the executive board for Student Affiliates of the American Psychological Association. www.aidashahghasemi.com
Davu Seru:
Improvising musician and composer Davu Seru (b. 1978) has collaborated for the past 20+ years with artists including Milo Fine, Nicole Mitchell, Douglas R. Ewart, Donald Washington, Evan Parker, Anthony Cox, George Cartwright, Mankwe Ndosi, Tony Hymas, Raphael Toral and Dean Magraw. He also teaches writing and literature at Hamline University and is co-author with Charles Chamblis of the book Sights, Sounds, Soul: The Twin Cities through the Lens of Charles Chamblis (MN Historical Society Press, 2017). Jacqueline Ultan:
Jacqueline Ultan is a singularly creative cellist, composer & improvisor who’s unique versatility is reflected in the diversity of her artistic collaborations: urban groove trio Saltee; drum/cello quartet Purple Orange; Persion fusion trio Mirrorlands; pop band The Starfolk; improvising collective iNMiGRATiON; flute/cello duo J2J; world music trio Ottie The Mink; Beatles tribute band The Shabby Road Orchestra; and most recently, full-time cellist for The Laurels String Quartet. In demand locally and nationally, Ultan has recorded and collaborated extensively with theater, pop, rock and new music artists, including: Ondara, Kill The Vultures, Roma di Luna, The Jayhawks, Chan Poling, Dan Wilson, E. Carlos Nakai, Huun Hur Tu, The Jorgensens, and Kevin Kling. Ultan has received awards and commissions including a McKnight Performing Artist Fellowship; MacPhail Artist & Commissioning Grants; MRAC’s Next Step Grant and a State Arts Board Arts Tour MN grant. Ultan co-composed music for and participated in TED Talks! conferences in Minneapolis and L.A., and in June 2019, co-wrote a duo cello score for Theater Latte Da’s production of ‘To Let Go And Fall’, a play by Harrison D. Rivers. In October 2019, Ultan participated in The Jazz In the City Festival in Salzburg, Austria where she collaborated with composer Volker Goetz and dance artist/ choreographer Rosy Simas and January-March of 2020, Ultan toured with the Laurels Trio supporting singer/songwriter Ondara. Also a dedicated teacher, Ultan is on the faculty of MacPhail’s Center for Music and holds a Masters Degree in Performance from Yale University.
Jeremy Ylvisaker:
Jeremy Ylvisaker is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, teacher who has worked with John Prine, Bon Iver, Bruce Hornsby, Jenny Lewis, Andrew Bird, Sandra Bernhard, Damo Suzuki (Can), Anais Mitchell (Hadestown), Prince’s original New Power Generation members in tribute after he passed, Mouse on Mars, Swamp Dogg, Shahzad Ismaily, Eyedea, Merce Cunningham dance company, and many others playing in venues such as the Sydney Opera House and Carnegie Hall and on television programs such as Late Night with David Letterman and The Colbert Report. He has put out 2 solo records as well several as a member of the group Alpha Consumer.
