JC Sanford:

IMG_2358.jpeg

JC Sanford, most known for his edgy original compositions on previous projects like Pyramid Scheme and Keratoconus, will release his first jazz standards recording as a leader with Imminent Standards Trio, Vol. I on July 23, 2021 on Shifting Paradigm Records. Funded by a MN State Arts Board Creative Support Grant, the album is intended to represent JC’s pre-Covid regular gig at Imminent Brewing in his hometown of Northfield, MN. Recorded safely distanced and isolated, the widely varied ten tracks display the group’s mirthful interplay as well as deep swinging and grooving. In addition to Sanford on trombone, the album features Jeff Bailey on bass and Phil Hey on drums and is available here.

JC Sanford is a wide-ranging musician, deeply rooted in the traditions of Jazz and Classical music, yet constantly pushing at their boundaries. A protégé of legendary composer and trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, he has appeared on over 30 recordings as a trombonist, conductor, composer, and producer. He has been a member of several diverse NYC-based ensembles including the Asuka Kakitani Jazz Orchestra, Nathan Parker Smith’s prog-rock big band, Andrew Green’s film noir tribute Narrow Margin, British singer-songwriter Joy Askew’s New York Brass, and Joseph C. Phillips, Jr.’s jazz/new music hybrid Numinous. His original compositions and arrangements have been performed by John Abercrombie, Lew Soloff, Dave Liebman, and Danilo Perez. JC also conducts the thrice-Grammy-nominated John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, as well as the MN-based JazzMN Orchestra. Since returning to his home state of MN in 2016, he has performed with JT and Chris Bates, Davu Seru, Anthony Cox, and others. He also received a 2018 McKnight Composer Fellowship, a 2019 MN State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant, and a 2021 Creative Support Grant to make his new recording “Imminent Standards Trio, Vol. I.”
