Cody McKinney is a bassist, composer, improviser, and sound artist currently residing in the Twin Cities. He has been actively composing, recording, and performing since the mid 1990s. McKinney studied jazz and improvisation at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and, later, composition and process conceptualization at the New School in New York City, as well as private study with jazz bassists Anthony Cox, Joe Martin, Lincoln Goines, and Larry Grenadier. His work straddles “a haunted space somewhere between free jazz and musique concrète,” with hallmarks that include his “liquid mastery of rhythm” and his use of graphic and text scores with indeterminacy and fixed time. Over his career, McKinney has had the opportunity to share the stage or record with some folks you may have heard of. This doesn’t make these musicians any better than some of the folks you haven’t heard of either…those are just the two kinds of musicians there are... as far as we can tell. Here are some you may know…Tower of Power Horns, Ben Wendel (kneebody), Andy Milne (Dapp Theory/ M Base) Grammy award winner JT Bates (Pizza Coupon, Taylor Swift, Fat Kids Wednesday, Alpha Consumer, Hiss Golden Messenger, Erik Kosskinin, Molly Maher, the blues brothers, was at the last supper, personally had pancakes with the queen of England.) Anyway, some of McKinney’s recent works have been recorded by his contemporary trio, Bloodline…which incidentally Pete is also a member!
