Cody McKinney and Pete Hennig have been making music together for 20 years.  In that time they have appeared on numerous records, tours, and stages together.  Friday night will feature McKinney and Hennig in duo format.  They will be joined by pianist, Joe Strachan for Saturday evening.

Cody McKinney is a bassist, composer, improviser, and sound artist currently residing in the Twin Cities. He has been actively composing, recording, and performing since the mid 1990s. McKinney studied jazz and improvisation at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and, later, composition and process conceptualization at the New School in New York City, as well as private study with jazz bassists Anthony Cox, Joe Martin, Lincoln Goines, and Larry Grenadier. His work straddles “a haunted space somewhere between free jazz and musique concrète,” with hallmarks that include his “liquid mastery of rhythm” and his use of graphic and text scores with indeterminacy and fixed time. Over his career, McKinney has had the opportunity to share the stage or record with some folks you may have heard of.  This doesn’t make these musicians any better than some of the folks you haven’t heard of either…those are just the two kinds of musicians there are...  as far as we can tell. Here are some you may know…Tower of Power Horns, Ben Wendel (kneebody), Andy Milne (Dapp Theory/ M Base) Grammy award winner JT Bates (Pizza Coupon, Taylor Swift, Fat Kids Wednesday, Alpha Consumer, Hiss Golden Messenger, Erik Kosskinin, Molly Maher, the blues brothers, was at the last supper, personally had pancakes with the queen of England.) Anyway, some of McKinney’s recent works have been recorded by his contemporary trio, Bloodline…which incidentally Pete is also a member!

Peter Hennig graduated from McNally/Smith College of Music with a degree in percussion performance, followed by two years of private study with Twin Cities based drummer Dave King. Peter regularly composes for and performs with The Atlantis Quartet, The Fantastic Merlins, The Zacc Harris Trio, and several others. He currently teaches a Jazz/Pop combo course at Macalester College in St. Paul.  Since 2010 he has performed at several European festivals and venues, including the Sons d’hiver festival in Paris, the Atlantique Jazz festival and the Pannonica Jazz festival in northern France, the Kind of Belou Jazz festival in Treignac (with Tony Hymas). In 2011 he received the Twin Cities Best Jazz Award with The Atlantis Quartet.  His compositions have been featured on 89.3 The CURRENT, 88.5 KBEM, and 90.3 KFAI. He is a recipient the Minnesota Emerging Composers Award (MECA) and McKnight Fellowship (w/the Atlantis Quartet).

Over the past 20 years Peter has performed with many groups and artists, including Sheila Ray Charles (Daughter of R&B legend Ray Charles), Tony Hymas, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Polly Gibbons, Imani Uzuri, Ben Wendel, Kirk Knuffke, Christian Howes, Joel Harrison, Daniel Kelly, Dennis Gonzales, Jean-Brice Godet, George Maurer, Patty Peterson, Estaire Godinez, Peter Ostroushko, Tina Schlieske, Bruce Henry, Debbie Duncan, Mick Sterling, John Starkey, The Horn Heads, The Dolly’s, Fathom Lane, Liminal Phase, The New Primitives, The Droppers, Alex “Crankshaft” Larson, Katie Gearty, Ticklefight, Andra Suchy, The Adam Meckler Orchestra, The Bill Simonson Big Band, and many others.
