Brian “Snowman” Powers, the wild white-haired saxophonist from the swamplands of Louisiana, electrifies and moves audiences with his passionate and unpredictable playing style. Environment being a major influence on a player’s musical style, Snowman’s sound and feel are a unique blend of the traditions and raw emotion of New Orleans soul, the sophisticated improvisation style of New York City, and the greasy funk of the Minneapolis sound. Having been born with albinism, legally blind, and exceptional hearing, a career in improvisational music was a terrific fit. In spite of his major handicaps, Brain has achieved success as a touring saxophonist and a well-known recording/mixing engineer. Inspiring others with physical difficulties to exceed all limitation imposed upon them by others is the overarching drive in Snowman’s career. He believes it is so much more important to help others realize their true potential then to seek accolades and fame.
After growing up entrenched in the musical traditions of Louisiana, Brian was accepted into the prestigious New School Jazz/Mannes College of Music in New York City. While attending he studied with musical greats such as Reggie Workman, Arnie Lawrence, Mark Vinci, Chico Hamilton, Junior Mance, Lee Konitz, Gerard D’Angelo, Bobby Sanabria, George Garzone, and so many more. Starting a performing career in the New York area is a difficult task, and it shaped Snowman’s work ethic and drive to succeed. While living there he toured and shared the stage with so many talented musicians and groups such as The Samples, Hootie and the Blowfish, Big Head Todd, The Wild Magnolias, Swampadelica, Alaskin, The Spin Doctors, Soulive, and so many others. His playing was also featured on shows such as MTV’s The Real World, Jam Bands Magazine, and others.
Brian made a move to Minneapolis in the early 2000’s and quickly became integrated into the fertile Minneapolis music scene. Having been a recording session musician for many years, the Snowman always felt that the saxophone sounds recorded could use some improvement. This inspired him to attend the Institute for Production and Recording in order to learn the craft of audio production. There he studied with greats such as Tom Tucker, Steve Hodge, Paul Peterson, Ricky Peterson, and many others. Brian has been recognized as an exceptional recording engineer/producer after winning 2nd in the world in the Audio Engineering Society’s surround sound mixing competition, Avid Icon award, and has worked with many recording labels. Now located at the historic Minneapolis recording studio Creation Audio, Brian’s clients include Juanes, Victor Wooten, The Samples, Debbie Gibson, Oleta Adams, Paul Peterson, Ricky Peterson, Cory Wong, Gypsy, Darnell Davis and the Remnant, Excelsior Gospel Choir, Minneapolis Gospel Sound, Robert Robinson, Sony Music, Universal Music Group, MTV Video Productions, Megan Hamilton, Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, AOL Live In Studio Sessions, and many others.
While continuing to tour, with many groups such as the legendary Gypsy, Chase and Ovation; A Salute to the music of Prince, the New Primitives, and others, the Snowman continues to focus on his new group, “The Snowman Band”. This new group is a fusion of the sounds from New Orleans, New York, and Minneapolis, and features collaborations with amazing musicians such as Victor Wooten, Charlie Hunter, Ricky Peterson, Paul Peterson, and others. Having also entered into the EDM scene, Brian continues to create new music, push the boundaries of genre and creativity, surpass the limitations of his disability, and spread joy to all who hear his passionate saxophone style.
