Zaq Baker’s catalogue dares to ask questions like, “What if Billy Joel was younger and dumber?” “What if rock music was uncool?” and, “What if we brought a punk ethic to musical theatre?” His material was once described by a graphic designer as “really whiny” and by a Twin Cities local as “like the male Taylor Swift.”
With grand piano at the center, Zaq’s melody-candy anthems recount heartbreak, mental health, and the pains of growing up. Showtunes, emo revival, and bright, accessible lyrics form the backdrop for a unique, relatable collection.
Zaq’s most recent album, This Time It’s Personal, was released on February 4th, 2022. The intimate, stripped-down piano and strings feature was preceded by Maddie’s Delivery Service, was released on February 18th, 2021 — an exhale to the heavily anticipated Cardio, released December 20th, 2020. Zaq’s existing videos include puppy-love single “I Wanna Be Your Night Owl”; two live sessions from the Good Kid Manic Summer series; and a concept video for fan favorite “Spearmint.”
Since age 10, Murphy has been immersed in music. Raised in Kansas City, spending time in his father’s home studio is where his love for music began. He received his degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Kansas in Lawrence and then refined his musicality in New Orleans, playing with some of the best musicians in the city. While currently residing in Minneapolis, Murphy carries the sound of these musical cities with him everywhere he goes. Pulling inspiration from his time as a jazz bassist, and drawing heavily from the sounds of Minneapolis, Kansas City, and New Orleans, he now wants to go back to where it started. Most of all inspired by his father’s songwriting, he also pulls from the sounds of an amalgam of other artists ranging from the Beatles to Maggie Rogers. His music covers a wide range of topics-from cats, to love, to notebooks, to how different people view the world.
Starting during the Covid-19 lockdown, Murphy got to work learning how to produce, mix, and write his own songs. This October he will be releasing his first original song, titled “We’ll Have a Good Time” which features his good friends from KU and Austin-based band, Glass Bandit. After 3 years of endless writing and revisions, many more exciting songs and collaborations are in store for Murphy.
