Brandon Commodore is our resident curator for Monday nights in July! This week features LA Buckner Trio and Omar Abdulkarim Quintet.

Arthur “L.A.” Buckner‘s deep infatuation with music began at an early age. At age 3 he would practically go an entire church service without looking away from the drums. His father took notice and shortly thereafter purchased his first drum kit.

L.A. Buckner is a performing musician, teaching artist, and producer from the Northside of Minneapolis. He holds a master’s degree in Percussion Performance from McNally Smith College of Music. Currently, LA serves as co-host for the two-time Webby award-winning PBS music education YouTube series Sound Field.

Minneapolis native Omar Abdulkarim has been playing trumpet since he was 14 months old, learning from his father, Ahmed Abdulkarim. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in music performance from the renowned New School for Jazz and Contempory Music. He has performed around the world with various groups at the Haitian Jazz Festival, Switzerland at Marian’s Jazz room, Also at the top clubs in New York including the Blue Note, Small, and Birdland. He has performed and worked with Roy Hargrove, Redman, Method Man, KRS-ONE, Talib Kweli, Lauren Hill, Nicholas Payton television studio orchestra, Jose James, and Valerie Ponomarev big band to name a few.
