"One of the most unique and compelling artists." - No Depression
"Carol King by Way of Big Thief." - Magnet
"I subscribe to the Japanese philosophy of Kintsugi. The art of breaking and being glued back together again with gold. As a songwriter and as a person, that’s what I’m interested in — a broken but beautiful life.
I’ve been riding the flow state wave of songwriting for just over a decade now, studying everything from clawhammer banjo in my native state of Florida with Steve Martin Banjo Award Winner Mark Johnson to hit-songwriting with Kara DioGuardi at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
I currently reside in Nashville, TN. When I’m not making noise in the studio with my drummer/partner Brian and my dog Hap, I’m out on the road. Breathing in and out, trying to keep shining this little light of mine." - Laney Jones
bathtub cig is the intimate depression pop project of Hilary James. Born in a Minneapolis bedroom the spring of 2017, it is an honest attempt at coping with her long struggle with mental health. She is joined by Dave Power on drums, Skyler Nowinski on bass, and Hannah Hebl on synth and harmony. Their 2018 debut EP “Old Light” draws comparisons to a synth-pop version of Frankie Cosmo with raw lyrics. 2021 EP “bed” is both a dream-like and hazy musing on quarantine as well as a heartbreaking attempt to cope with grief. In a departure from James’ first full band EP “Old Light”, this new release is a stripped down solo voyage. Hilary is joined by Addie Strei (Adelyn Rose) on clarinet, flute, and bass to create beautiful textures to balance out the loneliness of the electric guitar.
Their debut full length “Night Blindess” was included in MPLS St. Paul magazine's "10 Essential MN Albums of 2022" along with the likes of Lizzo, Trampled by Turtles, and Miloe!
Filthy Kittens started in Minneapolis in March of 2022, with general tendencies toward folk rock. In addition to new material, their songbook reaches into previous bands and solo projects involving Filthy Kittens members. The band consists of Henry James Patterson, Mitchell Nelson, Desmond Lawrence, Irene Manning, and Satchel Bruna.
Filthy Kittens released their first single “Mr. Tambourine Man” in October 2022. Their debut album, Trouble in Mayberry, was released in January 2023, coinciding with a release show at 7th St Entry. The album is a collection of songs about love, small towns, childhood, and light politics.
