For the first three Tuesday’s in September, Rabeca presents “Rabeca and Friends,” a collaborative residency at Icehouse. Each week, the genre-melding band Rabeca is teaming up with a different musical guest (Freaque, Alex Woods, and Willow Waters) to create a one-night-only experience. Rabeca will share the stage with each guest, creating a new supergroup that fuses some of Rabeca’s original songs and their guest’s music into a unique medley.  Plus, each week of “Rabeca and Friends” will feature a set from another of Rabeca’s dear pals (Anita Velveeta, Dr. Goon and the Daily Tribune, and Full Catholic).

As a band that combines a wide range of influences from jazz shredders to harmonizing choirs, Rabeca is no stranger to collaboration and improvisation. They can’t wait to launch this residency with some dear musical friends, and make new ones along the way!

Minneapolis’ Rabeca never stays in one place for too long. Each song meanders from meditative solos to upbeat drum shuffles and rich chordal harmonies. Drawing on their individual backgrounds in jazz big band, madrigal singing, and jam bands, Rabeca fuses improvisation with catchy hooks to capture playful and joyous energy. Rabeca is Alex (keys, vocals), Anna (saxophone, vocals), Colleen (guitar, vocals), David (bass), and Satchel (drums).

MINNEAPOLIS-BASED FULL CATHOLIC BEGAN WITH FOLK JAMS AROUND BACKYARD BONFIRES AMONG THREE FRIENDS WHO WERE SCHOOLED IN ATHENS, GA. PRE-PANDEMIC, SONGWRITERS DANI MICHAELE (LEAD VOX, BASS, GUITAR), LANE MILLER (GUITAR, BASS, VOX), JOHN CALDWELL (SYNTH, GUITAR, VOX) WERE SPREAD OUT ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, PASSING HOMEMADE DEMOS AROUND, GETTING TOGETHER TO SWAP INSTRUMENTS, AND TAKING CRACKS AT EACH OTHER’S BURGEONING TUNES. IN MINNEAPOLIS, THEY ENLISTED SAM HALL AS THEIR RIGHTFUL DRUMMER, GAVE DANI FULL-TIME SINGING DUTIES, AND LOCKED INTO PANDEMIC STUDIO RECORDING, ULTIMATELY LAYING DOWN TWO RECORDS BEFORE HALL RELOCATED HOME TO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. TWO MONTHS LATER, IN THE SUMMER OF 2021, THEY MET DRUMMER AND SONGWRITER DES LAWRENCE (DUSTY FOREVER) WHO FELL IN INSTANTLY WITH THE GROUP AND FULFILLED THE PROPHECY.

THE BAND’S SOUND RANGES FROM NEO-PSYCHEDELIA TO FREAK-FOLK, ART ROCK TO PROTO-PUNK, AND FEATURES HYPNOTIC VOCAL HARMONIES, JANGLY RHYTHMS, FRENZIED INSTRUMENTATION, AND PROBING LYRICISM MEANT TO ILLUMINATE AND DISCOMFORT. THEIR DEBUT LP 'EVERY DREAM AT ONCE' WAS LISTED BY MIKE MINEO OF OBSCURE SOUND IN THE TOP 20 BEST ALBUMS OF 2022, CALLING IT A “STIRRING COLLECTION OF SONGWRITING…AND EMOTIVELY GENUINE BEAUTY.” THE BAND TOURED THE ALBUM EXTENSIVELY IN THE MIDWEST WHILE COMPLETING THEIR SOPHOMORE LP, ""ALL IS WELL"" RELEASED SPRING 2023.

As the ripples on the surface of the river mingle and transform the lines and reflections of our world, so Willow Waters’ music shapeshifts and defies categorization. Dancing lithely between rock and roll, country, old folk, and jazz; bolstered by rich, intricate, and often surprising arrangements and instrumentation, her music exhibits exhaustive precision and delightful variety. And centering this vast array of orchestration is Willow’s singular voice – a voice that is grounding in timbre yet soaring in its revelations.
